Specific Migration Analysis is the analysis performed to determine whether specific chemical substances contained in a food contact material (such as glass bottles, jars, drinking glasses, etc.) migrate into food, and if so, to determine the amount of migration.
Although glass is generally considered an inert (non-reactive) material, additives used during the manufacturing process or metal oxides present in the composition of the glass (such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminium, etc.) may pose a risk of migration into food.
Heavy metals that may migrate from glass into food (particularly Pb – Lead and Cd – Cadmium) may have toxic effects. The migration of these metals into food poses a risk to human health.
Every food contact packaging material or article must undergo food safety compliance testing.
Compliance documents (such as a Declaration of Compliance for Food Contact Materials and Articles) can only be issued based on the results of these analyses.
Companies exporting food products are required to demonstrate that the glass packaging they use complies with European Union standards.
