Migration Analysis is the test performed to determine whether metal ions contained in food contact metal materials (such as stainless steel, aluminium, tinplate, copper, coated metals, etc.) migrate into food, and if so, in what quantity.
These analyses make it possible to assess whether the amounts of metals migrating into food are within levels that do not pose a risk to human health.
Metals such as Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Aluminium (Al) may have toxic effects when they migrate into food at elevated levels.
In Türkiye, the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Contact Materials and Articles, and in Europe, Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004, Regulation (EU) 2023/2006, and Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 establish migration limits for metals and alloys.
These tests are mandatory analyses that must be performed before issuing a Declaration of Compliance for Food Contact Materials and Articles.
Metal release may increase during coating, soldering, or welding processes applied to metal surfaces. Migration analyses ensure that this risk is effectively controlled.
They determine the amount of specific metal ions that may migrate into food.
