Regulatory Compliance in the Use of Preservatives in Foods

The types of preservatives permitted for use in food products and their maximum permitted levels are determined according to the relevant food category under the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on Food Additives.

Therefore, the control of preservatives such as sorbic acid and sorbates, benzoic acid and benzoates, as well as p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters (PHB) is important not only for verifying formulation and usage levels, but also for analytically demonstrating their absence when required.

Within the scope of preservative analyses performed in our laboratory:

  • Determination of Sorbic Acid, Benzoic Acid and Their Salts
  • Determination of PHB – p-Hydroxybenzoates (Methyl-, Ethyl- and Propyl p-Hydroxybenzoate)

are carried out.

These analyses support:

  • Evaluation of regulatory compliance
  • Verification of preservatives used in the formulation and their concentration levels
  • Product development and quality control processes
  • Analytical substantiation of claims such as “preservative-free”

Bilim Laboratories provides reliable analytical support to food manufacturers in their quality control and regulatory compliance processes, with laboratory infrastructure authorized by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and accredited by TÜRKAK.
