Stability studies in cosmetic products are conducted to evaluate whether a formulation maintains its physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics throughout its intended shelf life. Stability data are also among the key elements considered within the Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR).
At Bilim Laboratories, we conduct stability studies under four different conditions:
Products are evaluated not only at the beginning and end of the study, but also at intermediate checkpoints. Parameters such as color, odor, appearance, pH, density, packaging condition, and microbiological quality are monitored for potential changes over time.
Accelerated stability conditions are not applied identically to every product. They are determined according to the product characteristics, recommended storage conditions, and intended shelf life, with the Arrhenius approach used as a supporting scientific basis where appropriate.
This multi-condition and multi-stage approach enables a more comprehensive assessment of the product’s behavior over time under different environmental conditions, rather than evaluating only a single point in time.
PAO – Period After Opening refers to the period during which a cosmetic product can be used safely after it is first opened. It is generally indicated on the packaging with an open-jar symbol followed by markings such as 6M, 12M, or 24M.
For cosmetic products with a minimum durability of more than 30 months, PAO information should be provided where the concept of durability after opening is relevant to the product. Single-use products, products that are not opened during use, or products for which deterioration after opening is not considered relevant may be assessed differently.
At Bilim Laboratories, we provide comprehensive analytical support to manufacturers for stability, accelerated stability, and PAO evaluations, supported by our expertise in cosmetic testing.
