Adulteration in Distilled Spirits / Counterfeit Alcohol

In recent years, the illegal production of counterfeit, illicit, adulterated, and imitation alcoholic beverages under unhygienic conditions has increased significantly. Consumption of these products may result in methanol poisoning, leading to permanent blindness and even fatalities.

In Türkiye, the production and sale of alcoholic beverages are regulated under national legislation. Distilled spirits must be produced in accordance with the Turkish Food Codex and the Communiqué on Distilled Alcoholic Beverages, while production and quality control are carried out under the authority of the relevant regulatory bodies.

At Bilim Laboratory, the determination of ethyl alcohol and methyl alcohol content (by volume and by weight) is performed using GC-FID instrumentation. Test results are evaluated in accordance with the requirements of the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Distilled Alcoholic Beverages.
