Heavy Metal Risks in Cosmetic Products

Heavy metals may be present in certain cosmetic products as impurities or, in some cases, to enhance product performance and durability. Repeated daily exposure over long periods may contribute to the accumulation of these elements in the body. Although the body can eliminate small amounts of heavy metals, excessive exposure may result in accumulation, potentially affecting cellular function and increasing the risk of premature aging, reproductive and developmental disorders, kidney and liver damage, and other adverse health effects.

To help ensure consumer safety, the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (TİTCK) published the Guideline on Heavy Metal Impurities in Cosmetic Products on 10 May 2016. The guideline requires manufacturers to evaluate heavy metal impurities, with particular emphasis on Lead (Pb), Arsenic (As), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), and Antimony (Sb).

Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that both raw materials and finished cosmetic products comply with the applicable limits for heavy metal impurities and do not pose a risk to consumer health.

At Bilim Laboratory, heavy metal testing is performed within the scope of our ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, using validated analytical methods in accordance with applicable national and international standards.
